Process for cooling metallic workpieces, esp. to harden them, by means of cooled gases under superatmospheric pressure in a cooling chamber is novel in that: (a) an amt. of cold gas sealed off from the cooling chamber (1) is prepd. in a cooling circulation system connected to the cooling chamber (1), the cooling circulation system having a geometric volume larger than the geometric volume of the cooling chamber (1); (b) the workpieces (38) are placed in the cooling chamber (1); (c) the cooling chamber (1) is opened up to the cooling circulation system; and then (d) the gas is passed over the workpieces (38) to cool them. Also claimed is the appts. for carrying out the above cooling process, esp. quenching of workpieces (38) using pressurised cooling gases. The appts. has a pressure resistant cooling chamber (1) into which the workpieces (38) are placed, a pressure resistant circulation system conduit (15) connected to the cooling chamber, the conduit having a cooler (20) and blower (22) for the cooling gases, and valves (25, 26) for controlling the supply and withdrawal of the cooling gases. The appts. is novel in that the cooling chamber (1) is fitted out exclusively for cooling and can be sealed off from the circulation system conduit (15) on at least two sides by valves (25, 26), the circulation system conduit (15) has a geometric volume larger than that of the cooling chamber (1), and the valves (25, 26) can be simultaneously opened such that the cooling chamber (1) can be put under pressure in sudden bursts from the circulation system conduit (15) and have cooling gas passing through it for a predetermined duration. |
