Method of making shaped articles of graphitized carbon/carbon composite material and articles obtained thereby

In the mfr. of shaped parts of graphitic carbon/carbon composite material by preparing an intermediate product (1) from a carbon fibre (F) impregnated with an aq. carbon precursor soln., drying and sizing, cutting into lengths and carbonising by hot unidirectional pressing in a mould, the novelty comprises (a) preparing the intermediate product (1) by continuously and successively subjecting the fibre (F), prior to drying and sizing, to surface cleaning and deoxidation heat treatment (3), surface coating in a solvent- and binder-contg. bath (4) to increase surface adhesion and wettability, and impregnation by passage through a bath (5) comprising an aq. soln. of mesophase pitch, high yield pitch and binder; and (b) depositing the loose intermediate product (1) in a constant vol. hot pressing mould in the requisite amount to achieve precise filling of the mould at the end of pressing, carbonising by hot pressing and then subjecting the moulded part to high temp. graphitisation. Pref. the coating bath (4) contains polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene glycol and the impregnation bath (5) contains polyvinyl alcohol as binder. Also claimed are high performance carbon/carbon composite material parts made by the above process.
