Novel 1-sulfo-2-oxoazetidine derivatives of the formula: <IMG> (wherein R1 is amino, acylated amino or protected amino and X is hydrogen or methoxy) are of value as medicines in the treatment of bacterial infections or intermediates thereof. When R1 is the acylated amino, the acyl is for example a group of the formula, (a) R6-CO- (in which R6 is alkyl or heterocyclic group), (b) <IMG> (in which R7 is hydrogen, amino acid residue, R8-(CH2)n-CO- ¢wherein R8 is heterocyclic group, phenyl, alkyl, phenylthio or alkylthio and n is 0 - 4!, R8'R8''N-CO- ¢wherein R8' and R8'' are each hydrogen, alkyl, etc.! or R8'''-SO2- ¢wherein R8''' is alkyl! and R9 is hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, heterocyclic group, cycloalkenyl or heterocyclecarbonylamino). (c) R10-R11-CO- (in which R10 is <IMG> ¢wherein R12 is heterocyclic ring or phenyl and R13 ls hydrogen, acyl, alkyl, etc.! and R11 is chemical bond or <IMG> ¢wherein R16 is alkyl, phenyl or heterocyclic group!, (d) <IMG> in which R17 is hydroxyl, sulfoxy, carboxyl, etc. and R18 is hydrogen, alkyl, etc.), or (e) R19-R20-CH2-CO-(in whlch R19 is cyano, phenyl, etc. and R20 is chemical bond or -S-).
