PURPOSE: To output the preceding vehicle approaching alarm by accurate timing. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a speed sensor 5 acquiring the speed of the present vehicle, a distance measuring means 2 measuring the distance between vehicles 2a between a preceding vehicle and the present vehicle, a control part 3 deciding the corresponded and prescribed alarm level based on the information on speed 5a and the distance between vehicles 2a, etc., and an alarm means 4 outputting the alarm of each level based on the signal 3a from this control part 3 to the outside. The control part 3 is provided with an image pickup means 1 imaging the advancing direction of the present vehicle side by side. Further, the control part 3 is provided with a preceding vehicle running state detection means 31 detecting the running state of a preceding vehicle by extracting the specified color part in the image data from this image pickup means 1 and and performing a recognition processing for the part and a distance between vehicles evalation means 32 setting the distance range with the preceding vehicle for which the alarm is required based on the running state information of the preceding vehicle.
