PURPOSE: To easily produce a liquid crystal electro-optical element using a ferroelectric liquid crystal by heating a ferroelectric liquid crystal to change into an isotropic liquid, injecting the liquid into the space between a pair of electrode substrates, and cooling the liquid to change the ferroelectric liquid crystal into a chiral smectic phase. CONSTITUTION: Polymer orienting films 1b, 2b are formed on the inside surfaces of transparent electrodes 1a, 2a, respectively, comprising conductive films formed on the surfaces of transparent substrates. The orienting films 1b, 2b are subjected to orientation treatment to align the liquid crystal molecules parallel to the substrates. A ferroelectric liquid crystal material in an isotropic liquid state prepared by heating is injected by using a capillary action into the space between the electrode substrates 1, 2 having the structure above described. After injection, the whole liquid crystal cell is slowly cooled at 0.1 to 1.0C per min. cooling rate to obtain a chiral smectic C phase. The ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules in the chiral smectic C phase as the result of cooling are automatically oriented because of the large polarity of the liquid crystal molecule itself. |
