PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inspect visually a defect in the edge portion of a cigarette by providing a means such as a camera for forming the images of the end face and periphery surface part region of the cigarette. SOLUTION: In an inspection device 40', an end face 10 of a cigarette is set in a cantilever state when the cigarette is carried. For highlighting the end face from its background, the surface of a drum 32 adjacent to a camera 46 has dark and non-reflective face, and light from a light source 48 is obliquely applied to the end face 10. That is, a bundle of optical fibers 49 directs light from the light source 48 at an incidence angle of approximately 45 deg. to the end face 10. A prism 500 is arranged for a camera 46 so that the image pick-up operation of the camera 46 includes both the end face 10 and a peripheral surface part 510. The drum 32 continuously rotates, but the light source 48 triggers a strobo flash only for a short time every time the end face 10 directly faces the camera 46. As a result, the camera 46 forms a still image or a substantially still image of the end face 20 and the periphery surface part 51 of the tabacco. |
