A method of inhibiting aromatase, comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof a pharmaceutical composition comprising an effective aromatase inhibiting amount of a compound of the formula (I): <IMAGE> (I) wherein X1 is a chlorine or fluorine atom, or a hydroxy group, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
