Polyoxyalkylene cpds. (I) and/or ionic surface active agents (II) are stabilised by the addn. of an alkane substd. by >=3 hydroxyphenyl gps. (III). The stabiliser (III) pref. has the formula ZCHX'CHR'R2 in which R1 and R2 are hydroxyphenyl gps. Z is H, phenyl, hydroxyphenyl or alkyl or a gp. YCHX2 in which Y is H, phenyl, hydroxy phenyl alkyl or a gp. X3X4HC(CH2)m in which m is 0 or 1-4, >=1 of the gps. X', X2 X3 and X4 is hydroxyphenyl and the remainder are H. (III) is generally added at 0.005-5.0 wt. % on (I) and/or (II) e.g. to aq. solns. contg. the (I) or (II) which are to be spray dried. The presence of the (III) overcomes brown discolouration of the mass during spray drying, and if (I) are present, overcomes explosion and fire hazards associated with the formation of peroxide cpds. in the drier. Prods. are useful in the prodn. of cleaning agents and detergents, hydraulic fluids, antistatic agents for high temp. spinning of polyester and polyamide fibres, lubricants for synthetic fibres etc. |
