PURPOSE: To cause off-track performance of a magnetoresistive head to be symmetrical, minimize the change between the magnetic center and the physical center, and improve the off-track performance. CONSTITUTION: A magnetoresistive layer 16 contacts a non-magnetic decoupling layer 14, has separated end regions, and has a true easy axis of magnetization. An antiferromagnetic layer 18 contacts both end portions of the magnetoresistive layer 16 and generates a longitudinal bias in the end regions. Conductive leads 20, 20' are separated from each other and their separated facing surfaces 30, 32 are extended in parallel to each other, thus forming an active region 24 between the surfaces. A flexible magnetic layer 12 generates, in the active region 24, a lateral bias large enough to maintain the center active region 24 in a linear response mode during the operation of this device. In addition, the facing surfaces 30, 32 of the conductive leads are inclined to form a predetermined acute angleθwith respect to the true easy axis of magnetization of the magnetoresistive layer 16. Thus, the magnetoresistive head operates to ensure symmetrical off-track performance during the operation of the device.
