<p>An improved compound transmission (40) design is provided for reducing gear hopout, particularly during PTO operation. In this design, a spindle (62) is rigidly secured to the input shaft (42), and a headset/fourth gear (74) is rotatably mounted on a spindle (62) by means of a full compliment needle bearing (76). A splitter gear (52) is rotatably mounted on the input shaft (42) and includes a sufficient diametral float with respect to the input shaft (42) to minimize tipping of the gear (52) while maintaining significant torque balance between countershafts. This configuration maintains concentricity in parallelism of the headset/fourth gear (74) and splitter gear (52) with respect to the synchronizer clutch (78) in order to prevent gear hopout. <IMAGE></p> |
