A frequency converter including a medium (MNL) capable of converting an optical wave at wavelength μp into an optical wave at wavelength μs. Said frequency converter enables the generally lost photon energy of the idler wave at μi (where 1/μp = 1/μs + 1/μs) to be used to generate photons at μs. By simultaneously providing a variety of phase tuning conditions within the medium (MNL), the frequency converter has a very substantially higher efficiency than is currently achievable. In an alternative embodiment, the decay of the wave at μp is used N times to provide a wave at μs with a very high quantum efficiency. The converter may be used as a frequency-tunable power source.
|
