A piston (28) working between end walls in a cylinder is mounted on a rod (24) passing out through one of the latter. Curved passages (50) through the piston connect the chambers at its opposite sides, and are shut off by valves (30) if the piston-rod speed exceeds a predetermined value in one direction, in which case second passages (52) connect the chambers together. A narrow outlet (58) is connected to the second passages, limiting the flow of fluid through them and thus controlling movement of the piston-rod. The dimensions of the outlet can be such as to generate a pressure difference between the chambers, and having a damping effect on the force applied. The opening can be formed by a separate baffle, bearing against an opening from the second passages so as to shut it partly off.
