The application describes the identification of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encoded gene and rapid methods for construction of plasmids efficiently expressing this or other genes. The EBV gene can be purified and used as an antigen for diagnosis and therapy of EBV related diseases. <IMAGE>
