The invention concerns the production of dispersion-hardened copper by a mechanical alloying method in which copper powder and a thermodynamically stable ceramic powder are ground in a ball grinder in an atmosphere of air. In order, using a method of this kind, to obtain relatively inexpensively dispersion-hardened copper with a comparatively high electrical conductivity, the invention calls for the ball grinder (1) to use balls (7) made of copper which have been pretreated by grinding in a ceramic powder.
