The process of filling waste transport trucks with compressed bales of industrial waste commences with filling most of the truck with bales of a standard size, then filling the remaining space with bales of thickness corresponding to the space remaining in the truck. The depth of the carrying space is firstly measured to determine the dimensions of the bales, and the compressing machine is controlled to produce bales of this thickness. The compression is by a hydraulically actuated piston controlled by measurement of the thickness of the bale. The depth measurement is obtained with the aid of a transmission chain (30) connected to a shield (20), rotatably driven by a signal generator connected to a programmable control device.
