A personnel transporter (10) of particular advantage to invalids comprises a travelling crab(16) with rollers which move on sliderails(14) fixed to the ceiling (12) of the area to be served. The crab housing (18) accommodates a battery or mains powered tractive drive together with a hoist having a suspension cable (20) supporting a crossbeam (22) to which a seat is attached by straps and a drop cable (24) connects the drives with the controller (26). Lights (28,30) provide illumination during use and it is recommended that one light source is independent of mains energisation to provide emergency cover.
