System for monitoring correct functioning of vehicle or trailer lights

A system for monitoring the correct functioning of the statutory and signalling lamps of a motor vehicle or trailer e.g. LA3 employs a fault detector and control unit (BG) for each lamp in the monitored group. The onset of an open or short circuit fault results in a voltage pulse from an electronic generator of fixed repetition rate matched to the signalling rate of the vehicle direction indicators. The pulses are of duration less than the interval between successive directional flashes and can therefore be coupled to the dashboard tell-tale light during this interval when the resulting increase in flashing frequency indicates a lighting circuit fault.
