PURPOSE: To provide a cover material for wounds which has a damp proof hydrothermal property and an effusion holding capacity by arranging the material to be composed of a hydrate gel containing a vinyl ester unit at a specified ratio and having a polyvinyl alcohol based copolymer with a block character and a viscosity mean degree of polymerization at a specified value as main component. CONSTITUTION: A wound cover material is made up of a hydrate gel which contains 5-50mol.% of a vinyl ester unit as given by the formula and has a polyvinyl alcohol based copolymer with a block character as shown byη=[OH, VES]/2[OH] [VES] below 0.6 and a viscosity mean degree of polymerization of at least 300 and in the formula, R<1> represents hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group, and R<2> and R<3> represent respectively a hydrocarbon group. The [OH, VES] represents a mol. ratio of a component sandwiched by a methine carbon having a hydroxide group bonded thereto of polyvinyl alcohole polymer and a methin carbon having acyloxy group, [OH] represents a mol. ratio of a vinyl alcohol unit, and [VES] a mol. ratio of a vinylester unit as given by the formula.
