PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of drying and the like of the nozzle surface of a head by a method wherein a carriage is moved to a capping position by a capping means when the carriage is stayed at the replacing position thereof by an attaching and detaching means until a given time is elapsed. CONSTITUTION: When the necessity of detaching a recording head cartridge 1 from a carriage 2 is generated in such a case as the replacement of a tank in the recording head cartridge 1 from a monochro-tank into a color tank, an arbitrary head cartridge replacing switch, provided on an upper case 17, is pushed. Then, a carriage driving motor is driven whereby the carriage 2 is moved to an opening provided at the center of the upper case 17. A user opens a head cover 20 and detaches the recording head cartridge 1 from the carriage 2. When the head cartridge 1 is recognized that it is not mounted, the carriage 2 moves to the head cartridge replacing position after power supply ON sequence. |
