PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal composition suppressed in the reduction in a drive margin at a low-temperature region and undergoing no change in characteristics even when left standing at cryogenic temperatures by mixing two specified liquid crystal compounds with each other in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION: This composition is prepared by mixing 0.1-30wt.% each of liquid crystal compounds of formulas I and II (wherein R1 , R2 and R3 are each a 1-18C linear or branched alkyl; X1 , X2 , X3 and X4 are each a single bond, O, a group of formula III or the like; A1 is a single bond, a group of formula IV, a group of formula V or the like; A2 is a group of formula IV, a group of formula V or the like; A3 is a group of formula VI, a group of formula VII or the like; and (m) is 1-10). It is desirable that this composition has chiral smectic C phase and that the tilt angleδof the layer of the chiral smectic C phase has an adjusted value of 3-15 deg. in the temperature range of 0-60 deg.C. The composition can be desirably used in the production of a ferroelectric liquid crystal element, a ferroelectric liquid crystal device, a liquid crystal optical shutter, etc.
