PURPOSE: To obtain a nematic liq. crystal compsn. which has a low birefringence (Δn), exhibits a nematic phase in a wide temp. range, and retains the nematic phase in a long-term low-temp. storage. CONSTITUTION: This nematic liq. crystal compsn. has a nematic phase-isotropic liq. phase transition point (TN-1 ) of 90-130 deg.C and a birefringence (Δn) of 0.060-0.085 and contains a compd. represented by the formula (wherein R<11> is a 2-5C linear alkyl; Y<11> is H or F; and X<1> to X<4> are each H or D (deuterium) provided at least one of them is D).
