A master/slave system which comprises an electronic exchange as a master device and various sorts of terminal units as slave devices connected to the electronic exchange. In the system, whenever one of the slave devices is started, a program for managing and controlling the started slave device is supplied from the master device to the started slave device, thus realizing always suitable management and control over the started slave device. In the case where a common control program describing only a common control procedure to the slave devices is previously stored in the master device and unique control programs describing unique control procedures to the slave device having different specifications are previously stored in the respective slave devices, whereby the necessary size of the control programs to be stored in the master device and to be supplied to the slave devices can be reduced.
