PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject linear polymer, polymerizable only with a transition metallic compound, having a high molecular weight, hardly containing the residual monomer and good in heat-resistant stability by adding a specific compound into a vinyl monomer and carrying out the polymerization. SOLUTION: This polymer having >=50,000 weight-average molecular weight, <=20% gel fraction and <=10 dispersion index of a uncross-linked part is obtained by polymerizing a vinyl monomer composition containing >=80wt.% vinyl monomer. The composition comprising the vinyl monomer, especially the one selected from (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylic esters, acrylonitrile and acrylamide, the transition metallic compound in an amount of 0.005-1% expressed in terms of the transition metal and the compound having theβ-diketone structure is preferably polymerized in the presence of oxygen.
