PURPOSE: To directly hydrate an olefin under mild conditions of a low temperature and a low pressure using a solid heterogeneous catalyst and thermally stably obtain alcohol by reacting the olefin with water in the presence of an organic polymeric siloxane containing sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION: An olefin such as ethylene or propylene is reacted with water in the presence of an organic polymeric siloxane, having a sulfonic acid group such as an aromatic sulfonic acid or an alkylsulfonic acid group and further preferably carrying out the coating and/or silylating treatments of the siloxane with a silane compound of the formula (R)n SiX4-n [R is a 1-4C aliphatic hydrocarbon or a 6-15C aromatic hydrocarbon; X is an alkoxy, Cl, Br or I; Si is silicon; (n) is 0-3] to afford the objective alcohols. |
