The cylindrical encapsulation tube houses nuclear fuel and has a plenum space contg. an inner filler gas, e.g. helium. In connection with the plenum space the tube also contains a quantity of water, which is housed in a separate chamber, which with the water in steam form is connected to the plenum space, whereby the water in the fluid phase is maintained separately from the plenum space. The plenum space is in the upper part of the nuclear fuel element, which is provided with an extended part housing the separate hamber. The connection between the separate chamber and the plenum space is maintained by a steam snorkel extending upwards into the chamber to a level above that of the water quantity is provided with a central passage issuing upwards into the chamber, whilst at the bottom it is connected to the plenum space. |
