FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: method involves interaction of 8-hydroxyquinoline with bromine excess in medium of chloroform at mass ratio of chloroform and 8-hydroxyquinoline = (15-30):1. Bromine is taken at amount not exceeding 1.1-fold excess of stoichiometry. After termination of 8-hydroxyquinoline interaction with bromine the bromine excess is bound by addition of 8-hydroxyquinoline to reaction mass at stoichiometric amount to bromine excess in reaction mass followed by reaction mass keeping, isolation of 5,7-dibromo-8-hydroxyquinoline precipitate from reaction mass by filtration. Mother liquor is recovered to the cycle, precipitate is treated with water at t = 90-100 C followed by aqueous solution cooling and isolation of the end product from it.
