A flexible reinforced tube (10) of constant internal and external diameter is introduced into the upper part of the trachea (14) using local anaesthetic and a guide wire. The tube (10) has a series of orifices (12) at its far end which efficiently mix the oxygen delivered with the air breathed by the patient. The tube (10) has a joint (24) at its outer end which enables connection to be made with a supply tube (26) fed from a portable source of oxygen (38). The tube constituting the catheter (10) is secured to the patient's neck by a fine chain (20) and fitting (18).
