PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a (meth)acrylate-based block copolymer excellent in general- purpose properties and having a high molecular weight by polymerizing anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester in the presence of a specific phosphorus compound and a specific cyclic ether compound. SOLUTION: This block copolymer is obtained by polymerizing, at first, a first monomer (M1 ) inα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid esters [preferably a (meth)acrylic acid ester, etc.), then, a second monomer (M2 ) in theα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid esters in the presence of (A) a phosphorus compound expressed by the formula [R<1> and R<2> are each a (substituted) alkyl, a (substituted) cycloalkyl or a (substituted) aryl. R<1> together with R<2> are allowed to form a divalent organic group; X is a halogen] (preferably a monochlorodiarylphosphine such as chlorodiphenylphosphine, etc.), and (B) a three-membered cyclic ether compound such as ethylene oxide, etc., and/or a four-membered cyclic ether compound such as oxetane, etc.
