PURPOSE: To fill a paste containing a prescribed oxygen-contained powder obtained by pulverizing the ingot of a rare earth hydrogen storage alloy into a conductive core body under an inert gas containing a prescribed ratio of oxygen gas to manufacture a negative electrode, and prevent the fluctuation of flowing property of the paste and the corrosion of the hydrogen storage alloy powder. CONSTITUTION: A hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode 1 for alkaline secondary battery is spirally wound through a separator with a positive electrode 2, and housed in a bottomed cylindrical vessel 4. The ingot of a rare earth hydrogen storage alloy is pulverized in an inert gas atmosphere to which 0.0010-0.1% (volume) of oxygen gas is added, whereby a powder having an oxygen content of 500-1500ppm is formed. The paste of the negative electrode 1 is prepared from the powder, a polymer binder, a conductive agent, and water. The paste is filled in a conductive core body, whereby the negative electrode is manufactured. |
