PURPOSE: To orient liquid crystal molecules all over the pixel part in a good orientation state and to enable a color image display of high quality by forming color filters in such a manner that the thickness ratio of the color filter of each color to the thickness of the liquid crystal layer corresponding to the color filter is controlled to a specified value or smaller. CONSTITUTION: The color filters are formed in such a manner that the thickness t of each color filter 5R, 5G, 5B and the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer 8 corresponding to the color filter of each color satisfy the relation of t/d<=0.19. Compared to a conventional liquid crystal display element having t/d ranging from 0.283 to 0.211, even when the liquid crystal layer thickness d is same, the color filter is made thin. Therefore, the height of overlapped part on edges of color filters can be made smaller and the projections of an orienting film 6 to be formed on the overlapped part can be made thin. The area around the projections can be enough rubbed in the orienting treatment, and by orienting the film 6 almost along the longitudinal direction of the overlapped part of filter edges, the area around the projections in the orienting film 6 can be more sufficiently rubbed. |
