PURPOSE: To detect a defect on the heat insulating material fitting side of a pipe without removing the heat insulating material fitted on one side face of the pipe. CONSTITUTION: A defect detecting probe 9a mounted on a probe moving device 26 sliding the probes 9a, 9b on the outside surface of a pipe 1 obliquely feeds the transmitted wave into a pipe body in the oblique direction to the pipe axis to detect a defect, a position detecting probe 9b mounted on the probe moving device 26 obliquely feeds the received wave into the pipe body in the perpendicular direction to the pipe axis to detect a weld section, and an image processor 25 forms a defect signal from the output signal of the defect detecting probe 9a. A weld section position image is formed from the output signal of the position detecting probe 9b, then they are overlapped on a weld section cross sectional shape pattern inputted in advance, an image correlating the defect and the weld section shape can be obtained for the pipe outer surface portion facing the sliding faces of the probes 9a, 9b, and the defect can be accurately detected without removing a heat insulating material fitted at this portion. |
