PURPOSE: To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display element which presents high contrast and is free dependency upon the visibility angle or formation of double image by laminating a liquid crystal layer, transparent electrode, transparent base board, complex refraction film, polarizer, etc., on a specular reflecting board which works also as an electrode to drive a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal layer 4, transparent electrode 3, color filter 9, transparent base board 2, complex refraction film 8, polarizer 1, and diffuser plate 7 having a strong forward scattering characteristics are laminated in the sequence as named on a mirror finished surface reflecting board 10 which 10 which works also as an electrode to drive a liquid crystal. Because the combination of one sheet of polarizer 1 and specular reflecting board 10 is equivalent to the arrangement in which two polarizers are laid parallel, so that a dark condition can be generated by interposing a medium whose phase difference in polarization varies for half a wavelength between a mirror and the polarizer. Liquid crystal is used as this medium to produce phase difference, and if the amount of complex refraction is changed by the impression of a voltage, the reflecting power can be changed. If such an arrangement is introduced that the amount of complex refraction in the liquid crystal layer 4 does not change according to the incident angle, it is possible to remove the dependency upon the visibility angle. |
