摘要 |
PURPOSE: To provide a method to make effective improvement of the orientation of liquid crystals in a liquid crystal display element by relating the temp. at impression of a voltage with the layer spacing, wherein the voltage impression is made for improvement of the liquid crystal orientation. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal or liquid crystal compound is prepared so that it has a chiralsmectic phase, the layer spacing exhibits a minimum value relative to the temp. in the chiralsmectic phase, and the temp. lies over 25 deg.C. A voltage is impressed on a liquid crystal element pinched by two substrate boards having electrodes so that the layer of this liquid crystal or liquid crystal compound is vibrated to generate the intended orientation. At this time, Tmin should be within±10 deg.C in the condition that the voltage impression temp. is over 25 deg.C, where Tmin is a temp. which lies lower than the upper limit temp. exhibiting the chiralsmectic phase and gives a minimum in the layer spacing.
