END FACE EMISSION LED AND FABRICATION THEREOF

摘要

PURPOSE: To increase the emission take-out surface by forming an impurity region at a notched part made in the end face of an underlying semiconductor and forming a PN junction between the impurity region and the underlying semiconductor so that the notched part functions as an emission layer. CONSTITUTION: A notched part 12 is made in one end face 11a at the corner thereof. The notched part 12 is made at the corner defined by the upper and end faces of an underlying semiconductor 11. The notched part 12 is defined by an inclining face 12a extending from the upper surface toward the lower surface of the underlying semiconductor 11, and a face 12b extending from the inclining face 12a toward the end face 11a of the underlying semiconductor 11. When an impurity region 13 serving as an emission part is formed on the surface layer part at the notched part 12 of the underlying semiconductor 11, the notched part 12 functions as an emission layer to increase the emission take-out surface thus enhancing the emission efficiency.
