PURPOSE: To easily realize the improvement of a bit error probability by improving the quantization noise characteristic in a coherent optical communication system. CONSTITUTION: The receiver 30 receiving an optical signal sent from a transmitter 10 is made up of a converter 32 comprising a nonlinear optical medium providing a prescribed optical conversion, and a homodyne detector 34 applying phase detection to the converted signal. The nonlinear optical medium includes at least one interaction process represented by products of three a<+> or (a) or over when the interaction with an optical signal is represented by the Hamiltonian form, where a<+> is a creation operator and (a) is an annihilation operator for an optical signal field. |
