PURPOSE: To improve the measuring accuracy or resolving power without changing the pitchλof the magnetic graduation of a magnetic scale in a detecting head. CONSTITUTION: In the detecting head comprising magnetoresistive elements 21A, 21B, 22A, 22B,...25A, 25B for detecting a relative displacement to a magnetic scale having a magnetic graduation of a prescribed pitchλ, this head includes five pairs of magnetoresistive elements so as to take out a five-phase AC signal between a common terminal 30 and output terminals 31, 32,...35 as output signals.
