A zero insertion force miniature grid array socket for receiving ball grid array packages (60) has a base (20) having an array of passages (28) and contacts (30) mounted therein. A carrier (40) for receiving the ball grid array package (60) and slidingly movable from a nonmated position to a mated position. The contacts (30) having surface mount tails exposed in a perpendicular direction above the base (20) and balls (62) of the ball grid array package (60) being inspectable from the opposite side of the carrier (40) receiving the ball grid array package (60) thereon. The carrier (40) includes carrier arms (54) having cells (42) receiving balls (62) of the ball grid array package (60).
