The asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) terminal units (1a to 1f) transmit or receive ATM cells, and an ATM exchange system (2a, 2c, 2e) conducts the ATM cells between the terminal units. A virtual memory (3) for the ATM communications system has the regions (3-1 to 3-6) utilised by the ATM terminal units. The region (38a-1) of the real memory (38a) of the ATM terminal unit (1a) is used for entering data through the unit, and so on, the region (38b-1) of the memory (38b) for the ATM terminal unit (1b), for all the units.
