Telecommunications system with variable subscriber line matching

Analogue subscriber connection units (TAE1,TAE2) are linked in a network (GSTN) contg. e.g. three exchanges (GSW,GSW1,GSW2) serving different numbers of communication terminals (KEA,KEB,KEn). A controller (SI) sends measurement signals from a generator (MTG) to one connection unit (e.g. TAE1) and receives them (MTE) back from the other when the units are interconnected. A microcontroller ascertains transmission parameters of the physical link between the units on the basis of the transmitted and received measurement signals. It produces commands for varying the input impedance of the two-wire/four-wire sides by a switching device (SW1) in e.g. an analogue switch matrix (SW).
