The column has a steering spindle with guide tube and spindle section which is pushed into it during a crash. The guide tube jacket (5a) has at least one opening (12a). This permits the end part (8a) of the inner spindle section (4a) to move out of the guide tube. During longitudinal movement, the spindle section engages on an angled contact face (11a) in the guide tube, and is deflected from its longitudinal direction. At least the spindle section end part is tubular (9a). It has axial cuts, so that individual wall sections can be spread outwards.
