A process for the preparation of glycosides by enzymatic glycosylation with .alpha.- and .beta.-giycosidases from holotrichous ciliates and, in particular, from Hymenostomatida, is described. Glycosidases from holotrichous ciiiates are suitable for the enzymatic synthesis of alkyl glycosides, glycopeptides, and dior oligosaccharides. Preferred glycosyl donors are nitrophenyl glycosides, glycosyl fluorides or disaccharices, while preferred acceptors are shortchain alcohols, polyhydroxy compounds, in particular monosaccharides, or protected hydroxyamino acids or corresponding peptides.
