In a process for gas-shielded electric butt welding of two metal sheets (14,15) by current passage between at least one of the sheets and an electrode moved progressively along the edges (16,17) to be welded, the novelty comprises (a) placing, on the sheets prior to current passage, a flexible metal strip with two border regions coated with a heat resistant contact adhesive (pref. of cross-linked acrylic type or silicone type) for bonding onto the back faces of the sheets such that the regions extend parallel to the sheet edges (16,17); and (b) sweeping the strip middle region, between the border regions, with gas. Pref. the sheets are of stainless steel and the strip is of aluminium. Also claimed is a device for carrying out the above process and comprising a flexible metal strip coated with heat resistant contact adhesive in two border regions on one side of the strip. |
