The wear monitoring system has signals representing the rotation of the timing chain, provided by one of the chain wheels, compared with a given threshold value, for detecting extension of the timing chain due to wear. During the operation of the engine the relative phase positions of signals provided by respective angular position sensors (14,15) associated with different chain wheels (4,7) are compared with given values, to indicate extension of the chain when the actual phase position differs from the given value.
