HEAVY METAL-CONTAINING WASTE TREATING PROCESS AND APPARATUS

A method of and an apparatus for disposing waste containing heavy metals for conversion to a harmless state are provided. In the method, iron oxide or a material forming iron oxide by heating in the presence of oxygen and a reductant such as carbon are added to the waste. The obtained mixture is heated in a dry method, to form ferrite. The heavy metals are fixed in the ferrite, and the waste is converted to a safe and useful ferrite material. The disposing apparatus comprises a reactor (18), a raw material supply unit (10, 12, 14, 16), a stirring unit (22), a radiation heater (20), a volatile metal recovery unit (26), and a dust collector (28). <IMAGE>
