PURPOSE: To economically mass-produce a high-strength phenolic resin molding material well-balanced in excellent static mechanical strength and impact strength by mixing feedstocks with a combination of a solvent and water with a high-speed mixer followed by extrusion granulation. CONSTITUTION: A high-speed mixer is used to mix 100 pts.wt. of phenolic resin, 75-260 pts.wt. of chopped strand glass fibers 0.5-12 mm in cut length, 5-10 pts.wt. of a solvent for the phenolic resin <=60 deg.C in boiling point, and 2-5 pts.wt. of water to effect disaggregation of the glass fibers into single fibers to obtain a chipped phenolic resin/glass fiber blend, which is then kneaded under heating with a single- or twin-screw extruding granulator with the ratio L/D of 1-4 into pellets, thus obtaining the objective phenolic molding material. By this method, the glass fibers can be sustainedly dispersed in the molding material with higher adhesiveness between the glass fibers and the phenolic resin, thereby presenting high mechanical strengths of the product. |
