PURPOSE: To economically obtain a polyarylene sulfide having high heat resistance and mechanical strengths and excellent in adhesion to an epoxy resin, etc. CONSTITUTION: In this process for the production of a polyarylene sulfide by reaction fo an alkali metal sulfide with a dihaloaromatic compound in an organic amide-based solvent, 0.1 to 3.0mol%, based on the alkali metal sulfide, of a functional group-containing halosubstituted aromatic compound is, in advance, admixed with the alkali metal sulfide under heating and, subsequently, the dihaloaromatic compound is added to the mixture for reaction to obtain a slurry of the polyarylene sulfide, which is then filtered, and the resultant solvent-containing filtered cake is heated in a non-oxidative gas atmosphere at 150 to 250 deg.C, so as to eliminate the solvent, and subsequently, the cake is washed with water. |
