PURPOSE: To rationalize judgment of a start of engaging a next stage engaging element at poweroff downshift time in a control device for an automatic transmission. CONSTITUTION: An automatic transmission has a speed change mechanism 1 provided with a plurality of engaging elements B0 to B3, C0 to C2 to release of the elements the high speed shift side engaging elements B1, B2 to perform a downshift by engaging the low speed shift side engaging element B3, control device comprising an ECU3 of controlling this speed change mechanism based on a speed change command, input rotational speed sensor Sn1 of the speed change mechanism 1 and throttle opening sensor Sn2 of detecting a throttle opening of an engine E. The ECU3, detecting at any time an output signal from the input rotational speed sensor Sn1 when placed a throttle opening in a fully closed condition further when output a speed change command of downshift, has a judging means of judging the point of time, an input side rotational speed rises after lowering down, as a start of engaging the low speed shift side engaging element B3. |
