PURPOSE: To perform squat control at N→D shift time also at R→D shift time of an automatic transmission without generating a tie-up condition of a friction engaging element. CONSTITUTION: A control device has a speed change signal output means 30, release judging means 31 of judging releasing a friction engaging element B2 which must be released at squat control time and a high speed shift permitting means 39 of permitting a signal output of engaging a friction engaging element B3 which must be engaged at squat control time from the speed change signal output means 30 when judged releasing the friction engaging element B2 by the release judging means 31. Release judging by the release judging means 31 is performed by timer time counting based on an N range or R range signal or by directly detecting a release pressure of the friction engaging element B2.
