PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst capable of omitting a complicated synthetic step for a catalyst component and efficiently producing an olefin polymer by bringing a product containing a specific alcohol and a specified phenol into contact with a prescribed transition metallic compound. CONSTITUTION: (A) An alcohol or a phenol of formula I (R<1> is a hydrocarbon containing a halogen) or both, e.g. pentafluorophenol are brought into contact with (B) a part of a group IIIa element compound of the periodic table, e.g. triisobutylaluminum at (1:0.1) to (1:100) molar ratio in a solvent at -80 to +280⊥C) temperature for∞1min to provide a product, which is then brought into contact with (C) a group IVb transition metallic compound of the periodic table and the residual component (B) to afford the objective catalyst. Furthermore, a transition metallic compound represented by formula II [M<1> is Ti, Zr or Hf; X is H, a halogen, a 1-20C alkyl, a 6-20C aryl, etc.; R<2> is represented by formula III (R<3> is H, a 1-20C alkyl, etc.), etc.], etc., are preferably used as the component (C).
