PURPOSE: To produce a cutting tool excellent in the wear resistance and chipping resistance of the edge by using the cutting side face of a high speed steel series or a die steel series as an ion irradiating face and coating the cutting edge with the nitride of transition metal. CONSTITUTION: While the side face 10 of the cutting edge 6 and the vicinity of a cutting tool 5 of a high speed steel series or a die steel series is applied with ion beams 9, the cutting edge 6 is vapor-deposited with the vapor 8 of transition metal from a crucible 7. The incident angle of the ion beams 9 is preferably regulated to about >=30 deg.. Thus, a smooth ion irradiating layer 4 is formed on the side face 3 in the vicinity of the cutting edge, and furthermore, the cutting edge part 1 is coated with a transition metal nitride film 2 having high hardness by about 2μm.
